PLANS to turn an established hotel on green-belt land in Bookham into a residential care home for the elderly were have been rubber-stamped by councillors

Developer Gracewell Properties was given permission to turn the Preston Cross Hotel, in Rectory Lane, into a 70-bedroom nursing home with associated close-care apartments by Mole Valley District Council’s planning committee last night (Wednesday).

In her report, council planning officer Caroline Hall said Gracewell had demonstrated enough “very special circumstances” to allow development, despite the plans being “inappropriate” to the green belt.

Mrs Hall added: “Having weighed in balance all the very special circumstances presented, it is considered that these factors in combination can be considered to offset the harm to the green belt.”
