The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for rain and surface water flooding as storms are due to hit Surrey on Thursday night and throughout Friday

Risk of surface water flooding due to heavy rain

A weather warning has been issued for the South East as heavy thunderstorms are expected to sweep across Surrey on Thursday night, continuing into Friday.

The Office implemented a yellow weather warning for rain on Thursday (September 18), at 11am, for Surrey and the rest of the South East with risks of surface waterflooding, lightning strikes and hail.

Poor weather conditions are expected overnight on Thursday, continuing on Friday late into the night.

According to the Met Office’s chief forecaster, a warm and humid airmass, currently covering southern Britain, will create thunderstorms.

The forecast said some places may stay dry but, in those areas affected by rain, 20-30mm could fall in a short time, leading to possible surface water flooding.
