Campaigners call on Mole Valley MP Sir Paul Beresford to join countryside battle

CAMPAIGNERS have sent Mole Valley’s MP a special map and called on him to join their fight to protect the district’s green belt.
The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has drawn up the map which shows which areas of Mole Valley are within the Metropolitan Green Belt and which are Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Both of these designations offer protection to the land against any planning applications.
According to the map, which CPRE campaigners hope Mole Valley MP Sir Paul Beresford will hang in his office, just 11 per cent of the district is free from any planning restrictions.
Andy Smith, CPRE Surrey branch director, said: “We hope that the new constituency map will encourage Sir Paul to fight for our local countryside and protect it from inappropriate development.
“In particular we hope he will work to ensure that in meeting the requirement for new housing in Mole Valley we get the right homes in the right places instead of urban sprawl reaching out into the countryside.”
The map shows 85 per cent of Mole Valley is in the Metropolitan Green Belt and the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty makes up for 41 per cent of the land.
Mr Smith added: “Surrey is under massive pressure from developers at present, and from government policies that appear to favour economic growth over and above protecting the environment.
“That is why we are calling on all Surrey MPs, the Government and local councils to work together.”
