Cobham travellers illegally camped at The Tilt site of ‘special architectural or historic interest’

Following recent traveller encampments in Walton and Hersham, a group has established itself at a conservation area in Cobham

Bins provided for the travellers are now “overflowing”, a resident said

A group of travellers have set up camp on an area of conservation land in Cobham.

The settlement – including a motorhome, caravans and white vans – has been on a grass area at The Tilt, off Stoke Road, since last Thursday afternoon (July 16).

In July alone across Elmbridge borough, traveller encampments have been spotted in Waterside Drive, Walton, and at three separate spots in Hersham – Old Esher Road, Hersham Recreation Ground and land near Rydens School.

David Tipping, who has lived near The Tilt since 1975, believes the move is a first for the land.

He said: “I’ve never seen anything like this before, it’s rather sad.

“The police were there within 20 minutes when they first moved in, but because it’s common land there is little they can do.

“Elmbridge Borough Council then got involved and provided the group with waste bins, which are now full to the top and overflowing.”
