Surrey countryside campaigners call on election candidates to sign green manifesto

MOLE Valley’s general election candidates have been urged to sign up in support of a manifesto of green aims drafted by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).
With parliamentary elections 12 weeks away, Surrey’s CPRE branch has highlighted ten policies it wants candidates to adhere to in an attempt to “protect vulnerable countryside”. Andy Smith, CPRE’s Surrey branch director, said: “These policies reflect the views of CPRE members and supporters throughout Surrey.
“We are urging every candidate standing for Surrey constituencies in this year’s general election, and candidates standing in local elections too, to sign up to the principles set out in our manifesto, and to commit themselves to the defence of our countryside and green belt.”
“Opposing excessive and unsustainable house-building figures” and “prioritising the regeneration of urban brownfield sites” are among the policies, as is “preserving neighbourhood character”.
