Guildford’s draft local plan will move forward to a second public consultation next month after being approved by councillors in an often heated debate on Tuesday night (May 24).
The planning document which proposes thousands of homes in the green belt was debated for around four hours, during which time some members of the public stormed out in protest.
Many councillors stressed the need to build on some of the green belt to meet the housing need, whereas others argued the land needed to be protected for future generations and not concreted over.
