Today Ben Paton (pictured) wrote an open letter to Cllr Spooner to say:
“I suggest that you spend more than 30 seconds before you make decisions that will change the face of the borough forever and destroy a thousand years of heritage.
On your specific point, it is SCC data. Would you rather be roughly right or precisely wrong? To make a pedantic point or to be correct in principle? The signal is clear: GBC development plans are out of proportion with the rest of Surrey.
But that doesn’t seem to matter to you because you think that some fairy Godmother – or rather a whole lot of self interested developers are going to build the necessary infrastructure – including all the social housing that you are still busy selling off – after 20 years of not building a new council house.
(And before you boast that GBC has actually built some council houses recently – you should note that the number sold off recently still exceeds the number built.)
The conduct of council policy, especially its failure to obtain a demographic model which it has paid for, is intellectually dishonest. Do you represent the people of this borough as a whole – or just those who live in Ash – for which you’ve created a unique and special policy in the draft local plan? Do you care about the quality of life of the people who live here and have lived here for generations – or do you seek to justify policy by promoting special interest groups and using expensive PR merchant to sugar your pill?”
