Former borough councillor Monika Juneja, who was convicted for lying, forgery and deception in June 2015, has gained sufficient signatures to spark a referendum on an elected mayor for Guildford.
After several failed attempts to deliver enough valid signatures to Guildford Borough Council, the local authority confirmed today that Ms Juneja’s petition has reached 5,269 signatures, exceeding the 5,184 – 5% of the electorate – needed.
“The referendum must take place by 24 October 2016 and we will announce the date when it is confirmed,” a spokesman for the council said.
