The Howards of Effingham

An article can be read here about the connection with the village and local area of the Howard family, the Barons and later Earls of Effingham.

It has been written especially for this website by Vivien White, local resident and historian, based on the research she did for an article called “Lord William, First Baron Howard of Effingham and his Surrey Lands” which is published in the latest edition of Surrey History, the publication of the Surrey Archaeological Society. The article for the Society includes a first complete transcription of a document at the Surrey History Centre of the actual grant of the lands to Lord William Howard. The article also corrects a claim in the book “The History of Effingham” that Effingham manor belonged to Chertsey Abbey, which was based on a misunderstanding of the Surrey History Centre document.

Vivien is currently chairman of EFFRA.
